Clinical Commentary & Context

What it is

Trojan Naturalamb is a natural membrane condom made from lamb cecum. It contains no latex, so it works for people with latex allergies. The natural membrane is thinner than latex or polyurethane and many users report better sensitivity. The FDA cleared it as a 510(k) Class II medical device for pregnancy prevention.

How well it works for pregnancy

Naturalamb condoms use the same class-level contraceptive efficacy as other external condoms for pregnancy prevention: 87% with typical use and 98% with perfect use in the first year (Guttmacher Institute). They block sperm effectively.

Critical STI warning

Natural membrane condoms do NOT protect against sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. The lamb membrane has microscopic pores that block sperm but allow viruses to pass through. The manufacturer and the FDA state this clearly on the product labeling. Naturalamb condoms are intended for monogamous couples who are not at risk of STIs. Do not use them for STI prevention. If you need STI protection, use latex or polyisoprene condoms instead.

Where to get it

You can buy Trojan Naturalamb condoms over the counter at some pharmacies and online. They come in packs of 3 or 10. They cost more per condom than latex condoms. Many retailers do not stock lambskin condoms in stores, so online purchase is often the easiest option.
