The science
Active ingredientStyrene-alt-maleic acid (SMA acid) copolymer (Plan A formulation by NEXT Life Sciences)
How it works in the body

A styrene-alt-maleic acid (SMA acid) copolymer hydrogel is injected into the vas deferens, where it forms a soft filter that blocks sperm while letting fluid pass. It can be reversed with a dissolving injection. The polymer is distinct from the styrene-alt-maleic anhydride (SMA anhydride) copolymer used in RISUG.

What to know about Vasalgel (Plan A)

Research and approval status

Vasalgel is an investigational medical device and is not yet approved for general use. It is not available by prescription or for sale. NEXT Life Sciences began Phase 2 human clinical trials in January 2026 under the name Plan A, following a successful delivery-device study completed in 2025. You can only get it by joining an active clinical trial. Organizations such as the Male Contraceptive Initiative can help you check whether you are eligible. Commercial availability is still several years away.
