| How it works | Gabapentin binds to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system, which may calm overactive temperature regulation and reduce hot flash frequency. Pregabalin binds the same target but NAMS 2023 does not recommend it for hot flashes. | Phyto-SERMs are plant-derived compounds that bind to estrogen receptors and weakly modulate estrogen activity. Tissue-selective, SERM-like activity — acting in brain and bone without stimulating breast or uterine tissue — has been demonstrated only for DT56a (Femarelle), a proprietary soy-derived extract, largely in preclinical animal studies. Generic red clover and soy isoflavones are non-selective phytoestrogens. |
