How it works

Phyto-SERMs are plant-derived compounds that bind to estrogen receptors and weakly modulate estrogen activity. Tissue-selective, SERM-like activity — acting in brain and bone without stimulating breast or uterine tissue — has been demonstrated only for DT56a (Femarelle), a proprietary soy-derived extract, largely in preclinical animal studies. Generic red clover and soy isoflavones are non-selective phytoestrogens.

SERMs bind to estrogen receptors and act like estrogen in some tissues (bone, vagina) while blocking estrogen in others (breast, uterus). This tissue-selective action can treat menopause symptoms without systemic estrogen.
